From Student to Qualified Therapist at LCCC

When I look back on my journey into counselling, one experience stands out above all—the time I spent as a student counsellor at Lanarkshire Counselling & Cognitive Therapy Centre (LCCC). It was challenging, inspiring, and deeply formative, and it’s where I truly began to find my footing as a therapist.

From the very first day, Annie and Colin, the directors, made me feel welcome. Their warmth and encouragement created an environment where I immediately felt part of a supportive community. It was the kind of place where you didn’t just learn about counselling—you experienced it, surrounded by people who genuinely cared about your growth.

At LCCC, I worked with real clients while still a student, which gave me invaluable hands-on experience. Seeing clients make progress, even in small ways, was inspiring, and it taught me more than any textbook ever could. Beyond the practical work, what made the placement so special was the community of students and qualified therapists. Being able to share experiences, discuss challenges, and reflect on my practice with others helped me develop my skills and confidence in ways I hadn’t expected.

Now, having graduated and become a fully qualified therapist, I often look back at my time at LCCC as a turning point. It wasn’t just about gaining experience—it was about finding my footing as a therapist, learning how to navigate real client work, and understanding the kind of professional I wanted to be.

I would highly recommend LCCC to any student therapist. The centre offers more than a placement—it provides a space where you can grow, make mistakes, learn from peers and experienced therapists, and really find your own voice in the profession. My time there shaped the foundation of my practice, and the lessons I learned continue to influence the work I do with clients every day.

For clients seeking therapy, I would also recommend considering LCCC. The centre pairs clients with student therapists who are highly trained and supported by a vibrant professional community. This means you can access quality counselling at a more affordable rate, while also contributing to the development of the next generation of therapists. From my experience, the environment is warm, professional, and genuinely committed to helping clients feel heard and supported.
